Schieffelin family papers, 1756-1907.

Papers document the career of Jacob Schieffelin as merchant landowner and Loyalist; travels and literary activities of his wife, Hannah Lawrence Schieffelin; and the careers of their son, Richard Lawrence Schieffelin, and grandson, George Richard Schieffelin. Papers of Hannah Lawrence consist mainly of literary manuscripts and notebooks of her poems; and an account of her journey (1780-1781) from New York to Detroit via the Saint Lawrence River in which she describes social life and conditions on the frontier, places visited including Niagara Falls, encounters with Indians including the Mohawk Chief, Joseph Brandt, reports of massacres and atrocities, and military expeditions conducted by British troops. There is also a transcript copy of a journal (1780) kept by her during the period of her courtship. Bulk of the papers of Richard Lawrence Schieffelin and George Richard Schieffelin reflects their law practice and their real estate holdings in New York City and include ledgers and account books, deeds, mortgages, indentures, land maps and bills and receipts. Included are papers relative to the administration of the estates of Jacob Schieffelin, Benjamin Ferris, and George McKay. There are also literary manuscripts and notebooks of Richard Lawrence Schieffelin and an orderly book (1818-1833) reflecting his service in the New York State Infantry. There is also correspondence (1867-1883) from John Ferris Delaplaine to George Richard Schieffelin relating mainly to real estate matters. Included also are genealogical papers, family photographs, issues of mainly 19th century New York newspapers and miscellaneous papers of the Blair, McKay and Scribner families including a records book (1812-1813) kept at Ellis Island by George F. McKay of the U.S. Artillery listing supplies issued to enlisted men.

Jacob Schieffelin (1757-1835), New York merchant, landowner, and United Empire Loyalist, founded a wholesale drug business which bore the family name for more than a century. He married Hannah Lawrence (1758-1838) of New York City, a poet and daughter of John Lawrence, a merchant and Quaker.
